One of the revered place of the Hindus,
Kachipuram lies 70 kms south of Chennai. An important destination it is
considered an integral part of the Golden triangle of South India that consists
of Chennai and Mahabalipuiram with it. The place is alo remembered as a seat of
learning of the great Shankaracharya, the famous Advaita philosopher. In present
context the city is counted among the seven holiest sacred cities and is next in
line in to Varanasi in popularity and importance among the
devotees.
Kachipuram remained the capital of different successive
dynasties starting from the Pallavas to the Cholas and the Rajas of Vijayanagar.
It was during the period of the Pallavas some where between 6th and 7th century
that the magnificent temples were erected. The city is prominent in present
times for the hand-woven silk fabrics and is regularly visited by tourists from
all over India and abroad.

TempleThe Temple list among the 1st of the 32 Tevara Stalam constructed
in the Tondai region of Southern India. Meant special and considered one of the
sacred temple, it is the largest temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in
Kanchipuram.The temple is referred to as one of the Pancha Bhoota Stalams
signifying the 5 elements of wind, water,Fire,Earth and space. The temple once
dominated the historical capital of the Pallava rulers
A significant
portion of the temple was built the Pallava rulers while the rest of the temple
complex was erected in the 17th century. The temple prides of its towering 60
meters high gopuram built by Krishna Deva Raja of the Vijaya Nagara Kingdomin
about 1509. No two towers can be found opposite each other nor are the walls of
the temple parallel to each other. The premise of the temple has a 540 pillar
hall with intricate decorations.The pillared hall was built by the Vijayanagara
Monarch.
» Vedanthangal Bird SanctuaryAbundant with
trees surrounding the entire locality, the Bird Sanctuary is near the village
tank. Different variety can be spotted including the migratory ones . The wild
species includes sandpiper, spoonbill, swan and grey wagtail. The lovely picture
of the birds can be taken in the months of October to February.

TempleOne of the oldest temple in Kachipuram, the temple is dedicated to
Lord Shivaand reflects the simplicity of the Dravidian architecture. It was
constructed by the Pallava Kings Rayasimha and can be bet described as the
successor of the rock temples at Mahabalipuram.The base of the temple has
portrait of lions standing on their hind legs. Created in the later part of the
7th century, King Ramasimha’s son later restructured the front side of the
temple. Nearby smaller shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, Parvati and Ganesha
along with Murugan can be seen.

TempleGoddess Parvati in the form of Kamakshi is worshipped in the
temple.The temple is more commonly called Goddess of Love. The inner shrine or
