Feast your eyes on the forest scene as you move on the kuchcha tracks
of the Bandipur National Park. The park is embraced with trees with light barks,
rolling hills and streams gurgling past rocks. Amidst the serenity of the
surrounding, you can clearly listen to the chattering mynas, drongos and
babblers and can behold a herd of cheetal graze in a grassy patch and above them
in the trees, a langoor troop munching on fruit. Located on the Karnatka- Tamil
Nadu border , along the Mysore- Ooty Highway, within the Nilgiri Biosphere
Reserve the Bandipur National Park mesmerises everyone with its enchanting
beauty.
Bandipur was established in 1931 as a hunting reserve by the
maharaja of Mysore. The reserve was expanded in 1973 to become the Bandipur
National Park. The region has a moderate climate all year round and can be
visited in any season. The park due to its proximity with the nearby big towns
like Mysore and Bangalore has become a weekend getaway spot for the
tourists.
Things to See and
DoBandipur National Park is oriented towards tourism. The forest
department has trekking routes inside the parks, and organises safaris as well.
The tourists can enjoy the jungle safaris which pass through the grazing areas,
salt licks and water holes where one can have excellent view of wildlife. Most
of the common wildlife like deer, gaur, elephant and langoor can be seen at
close range. The safaris last for 2- 3 hours and are ideal for wildlife
enthusiasts and photographers. Short jungle rides on elephant back are available
at Bandipur in the morning and evening time.
Magical NightAs darkness descends, the nocturnal echoes of
the jungle take over; there's a strident chorus produced by frogs and crickets,
punctuated by the melancholic howling of the jackals, mingling with the spodaic
sawing cough of the leopard. Far away the deep call of the tigress in the haet
ripples through the forest.
